Strengthening the Caribbean’s Sustainable Energy Future

The Caribbean is one of the regions globally most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, being heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels. Caribbean countries import on average 87% of their oil, compared to a global average of 21%, resulting in high energy costs, and adversely affecting the region’s sustainable development.

At the same time, women’s engagement in the renewable energy sector is particularly low in the Caribbean given the energy sector is one of the least gender-diverse sectors in the region. Yet research shows that women bring diverse perspectives and insights to creating solutions in the sector by leading more innovative and holistic approaches in their development and implementation.

Therefore, this research project aims to increase the participation of women entrepreneurs in the renewable energy sector through a cooperative model that fosters access to contracts, financing, networks, and capacity development. The research study is being sponsored by the ASPEN Network of Development Entrepreneurs.
Our Team
